Excision- Rottun Recordings

Taking influence from Drum and Bass, Metal, and Hip Hop, Excision is a Dubstep artist who must be heard to fully believe. Combining the morphing bass lines of Drum and Bass, the aggressive energy of Metal, and the laid back vibes of hip hop, Excision’s style is incomparable.

At only 22, this young Canadian’s passion for music has already driven him to become one of the biggest Dubstep acts of North America. Anyone who has heard a set by this bad boy has walked away feeling energized and refreshed. If your lucky enough to catch a live set, expect an assault of bass-heavy tracks, mixed quickly and seamlessly.

Upon the selling out and repressing of his first release, “No Escape” on his own label Rottun Recordings, it became apparent that there was a large demand for the dark side of Dubstep. This was proven to be true when Excision was asked by Electronic Music Superstars Pendulum to remix their latest single “Showdown.”

Look out for collaborations with North American Bass Guru Bassnectar, Pendulum, and many others ranging from Drum and Bass heavy-weight SPL, to Dubstep womp master DZ. With an upcoming U.S. tour alongside Pendulum, and a set at the fabled Shambhala Music Festival among many other Canadian and U.S. dates throughout the year, Excision is one to watch.

Check out this footage Brad shot when we were at Lollapalooza!

It’s difficult to avoid Bassnectar’s own self-definition, which appears somewhere in all the press materials for the San Francisco-based outfit: “A free-form project that merges music, art, new media, social involvement, and community values; dedicated to a constantly evolving ethos of collaborative creation, self reinvention, and boundary-pushing experimentation.” Or, to put it more succinctly, Bassnectar is a breakbeat-oriented electronic dance music act with a fine line in public relations and a sponsorship deal with Red Bull. On record, Bassnectar is DJ, producer, and remixer Lorin Ashton (aka Lorin Bassnectar) with occasional guest performers, but live Bassnectar shows are freewheeling affairs with close to two-dozen people on-stage, from instrumentalists, DJs, and rappers to graffiti and video artists. Ashton began working as a DJ and remixer under the Bassnectar name in the late ’90s, developing the live experience under heavy influence from the multimedia Burning Man Festival that takes place each summer in the California desert. Bassnectar debuted on vinyl with the 2002 single “Float,” followed by 2004’s “Creation Lullaby” and a downtempo album, Tempo Rosso, that was released as a promo item for Red Bull. The first proper full-length Bassnectar album, Mesmerizing the Ultra, was released in 2005, followed by Underground Communication in 2007. Stewart Mason, All Music Guide

Dubliminal Bio- Kozee

Kozee Dubstep DJ

Check out one of the hottest dub DJ’s in the game, after dropping one of the filthiest dub tunes of the year with DZ, “Crack” I think it’s time we learn a little about this dreamy dubstep diva…

Kozee (pronounced cozy) was born in Lansing, Michigan and started her love affair with music early. At the age of 7, she compiled her first mixtape, inadvertently on the path towards creating her own music one day. Her family would relocate to Sacramento, California, and in the early 90’s she started collecting vinyl and building hip hop mixtapes (through those she landed an opening slot for DJ Maseo of De La Soul fame). As the times shifted so too did her musical tastes, as the sounds of UK Jungle/DnB became the focus, but what she would realize later on she was just, like many of us, waiting for Dubstep to come along. “It really took a bit of time from when I first heard Grime & Dubstep for me to get into it, but once I did I couldn’t stop, it was definitely the music for me!”

As the sounds started to permeate the streets of San Francisco, Kozee banded together with Ultraviolet to start the legendary “Redline / Makeout Sessions” bringing the future sounds to San Fran. Now in its 3rd year the night is a staple in the local scene, always drawing a diverse, energetic crowd but with a musical focus locked on Dubstep!

With a current release on Badman Press and a forthcoming E.P. on Badman Digital, she shook up the dubstep world and gained serious attention from artists like Starkey, Crookers, Rusko & more!

Having performed back to back with Silkie, MRK1, and more while touring the UK and Europe – she continues to share the stage and draw inspiration from many other prominent North American dubstep producers including members of San Francisco thriving Dubstep community which includes worldwide recognized producers and DJ’s DZ, Djunya, Juju, DJG, Ultraviolet, AntiSerum, Babylon System, Kush Aurora, Sam Supa & many countless others!

Always one to leave an impression, the demand continues to rise for her performances! Not one to be afraid of meshing diverse sounds, we will be hearing more from this original rudegyal for years to come!!!

“As the leading lady in dubstep, you killed it last night. Never have I seen a female dj perform with such confidence and precision, mad style and attitude. Seriously more ladies need to realize that we don’t have to be sexual and sexy to be successful in the dj world. It’s too bad your set was short, but in my mind you were 100 times then any Uk/Usa/Canadian dubstep artist that has graced Calgarian ears.” -Peyote De Leon

His latest successes on the Beatports “Top Download” charts are a testament that his music is being recognized by listeners all over the world, with multiple releases hitting number 1 on Beatport for extended periods of time. Download Caspa Autumn ‘09 Mix

Caspa DJing Dubstep

Caspa DJing Dubstep

Caspa Promo Mix by fabric

Today, Caspa is synonymous with the underground. If you don’t know Caspa you don’t know Dubstep. With an epic list of tour dates taking him to every corner of the globe he still finds time to host a bi-monthly night at the world famous Fabric. Not content with running 3 labels , producing dancefloor bomb after dancefloor bomb and the acclaimed album ‘Everybody’s Talking, Nobody’s Listening’, his remix skills are in higher demand than ever, remixing for the likes of Deadmau5, Miike Snow, Depeche Mode and Kid Sister just to name a few.

This is his story so far…

Growing up in West London on a diet of Jungle and Hip Hop, Caspa started DJ’ing and experimenting with beats after a promising Basketball career was cut short by injury.

In 2003, under the pseudonym Quiet Storm, the track ‘Bass Bins’ was picked up by BBC 1xtra’s J Da Flex and things started to snowball. Founding his own label Storming Productions in 2004, Caspa also began a weekly radio show on the iconic Rinse FM. Signing up and working with the likes of Search & Destroy, Dubchild, Toasty Boy, DJ Narrows and Oris Jay the label soon became established as one of the dominating underground labels of the time.

After receiving a demo from Swedish producers L-Wiz, a thoroughly impressed Caspa decided to start a sister label ‘Dub Police’; its aim to focus entirely on exciting new artists and provide a platform to the new and quickly emerging genre Dubstep. With a string of successful releases from artists such as L-Wiz, N-Type, Rusko, The Others and of course his own productions under the Caspa alias, the label began to grow in to one of the trail blazing labels of the emergent genre. Meanwhile Caspa was also having success on other labels with releases like ‘Rubber Chicken’ which was snapped up by Tempa and soon became an underground anthem.

Amidst the ever growing hype, Caspa and fellow label artist Rusko were approached by Fabric to mix the 37th instalment of the legendary FabricLive series. Following on from such legends as John Peel and Fabio & Grooverider, this was the first commercially available dubstep compilation and played a significant part in bringing the genre into the limelight and introducing it to many new listeners worldwide. His anthemic remix of TC’s ‘Where’s My Money’ pushed things even further and his mix on Deadmau5 and Kaskade ‘I Remember’ further still.

2009 has seen Caspa take things to the next level with a series of high profile gigs & festival performances from Glastonbury and Global Gathering to sharing the main stage with Lily Allen and The Arctic Monkey’s at Serbia’s Exit Festival. With Caspa showing no signs of slowing down, 2009 is most certainly proving to be the year of the ghost.
