As far as this Obey EP goes, I have to say there are quite a few tracks that are at the top of my list, and I’ve honestly dropped all of these tracks in my set, so they’re all fit to make the dance floor shake like the San Andreas, but I can’t help but get down to “Gettin’ My Rocks Off” by Dayn. This tune will have you robo-steppin’ like a motherfucker! Even though Dayn’s tune takes the cake for me on this release, I absolutely love Eptic’s track, “Obey”. It has that high-pitched tone, like the squeal of a freight train (for my Point.Blank fans ) Honestly though, Eptic’s talents come though hard on this release. Jogo still has his cartoony characteristics peaking through in his track “Take This” which I find quite amusing as it accompanies his INSANE bass lines that can’t seem to sit still, like a 7 year old getting fed a blend of ritalin and Red Bull intravenously. Diesel, never a disappointment, as he continues to be one of my favorite dubstep producers with his track Malfunction. It’s not my favorite tune of his, but has definitely found it’s way in my playlist.

Bratkilla’s tune E-Fekt was quite a surprise! I was a heavy metal fan before I got into this thing they call dubstep and this is the HEAVIEST tune on the release. Heavy distortion driving this tune all the way through, great switch ups and a great touch with the vocals on the builds. Beautifully done. Lonestar was on my playlist with his track “Who the Fuck” which I HIGHLY recommend. His tune on this release “Amplify” thumps, you can’t help but feel like your trapped in a robo-assault. Great tune, but I do like “Who the Fuck” just a little better. D-Jahsta has been surprising me a lot lately as well, his last release “Evil Freddy” will be on my playlist for quite a while and this tune “Transmorph” is no exception.

Either im obsessed with crazy granny’s or we are shooting a video where by an elderly lady gets tormented throughout her daily routines by a gang of youths, being bullied etc, then suddenly she turns absolutely nuts and beats the shit out of everyone, stealing cars, pulling wheel spins and dognuts in the street.

So as most of my readers know, you’ve been one of my favorite dubstep producers for a while now, I remember checking out your myspace when you had 1,300 views. The first track I heard was “Full Metal” and my head nearly exploded, so much so that I named it my favorite track of 2009. You have a very unique sound, fill us in on how you got started making dubstep and how long you’ve been at it?

One of my m8s back in 2007 showed me a dubstep track and at first I was sceptical. It sounded bland, and kinda uninteresting to me what with just its sub bass and minimal drums, so I didn’t really take much notice until a few months later when I heard some of Caspa and Rusko’s tracks back in 2008, “Hammertime” “Where’s My Money” and “Cockney Thug” did interest me. At this time I was producing Hip Hop for a guy called MC Beads and a guy called Dap-C, so I didn’t have time or was even interested in making any dubstep tracks. It wasn’t until I started listening to the heavier sound of dubstep that I wanted to create tracks myself. Artists like Trolley Snatcha with “We Rock the Forest” and “The Future” pushed the genre even further in my opinion and showed people that dubstep really doesn’t have any limits. I wasn’t really sure where to start at first, specially going about making the right sounds for a dubstep track, so I just winged it an made a track for a laugh, not really thinking much of it and posted it up on the Dubstep forum “Jeremy Kyle Shut Your Mouth”. Rusko messaged me the day after saying he played it out through youtube on the fabric sound system. I can only imagine how shit that must have sounded though hahaha. After people like Rusko recognising the track and ideas I had, I thought i may as well carry on making more stuff but keep pushing the sound further.

What do you use to create your sound? (Gear/software/ you don’t have to get into plugins but I know the readers are curious)

I use Cubase and Reason. Reason mainly to create synths, drum kits etc, and Cubase to arrange, automate and record midi, as well as record vocals with a vocal mic I’ve got propped up in the corner along with all the Stella cans. Most of my sounds are created in the Malstrom or Thor Synthesizers, sometimes ill load a preset patch in one of them and mess around until I find a sound I like or ill make a sound from scratch. Hook up one of theses to the Scream 4 Unit and the sound instantly turns into a monster. I have a vocal micropone hooked up through a mixer to my Audiophile soundcard, where Ill put different effects on. The only other important peice of kit ive got is my Yamaha Keyboard, which I use to play everything, even down to the drum patterns. Its very rare that I draw midi notes in.

What music did you grow up on?

Well Firstly I grew up playing the piano, cello, drums and guitar and did all my grades on the piano, as well as doing music theory, so I learned to play quite a mixed bad of styles. I enjoyed playing in orchestras and doing concerts when I was a kid, I still listen to classical/jazz/blues music now. When I was growing up I had a passion for Hard House/Trance/Garage music. The energy and vibe I got from it was euphoric, you might notice some of my tracks taking on the “dance” vibe, I think it bodes well for the dance floor. Saying all that, I also used to listen a lot of rock bands like Greenday, Muse, Oasis and even Marilyn Manson. So yer, a mixed bag of music to be honest, I find every style of music has a certain value. I started composing music in my early teens but just on the piano, I didn’t get into producing music properly till I was about 18. I tought myself how to use Cubase and Reason round about 2002 then left producing music for about 4 years to go onto chasing girls and getting twated out my face! Its only in the last year or so that ive got back into it.

How did you decide to call yourself “Diesel”?

Goes way back. My mates used to call me dirty Diesel because I always said such grimey things.

Do you have a certain method you use when you go about producing a track?

Not really. Ill be messing around creating synths and bash away at my keyboard making melodies and rhythms and most of the time something will just pop in my head and ill roll with it. If I think about things for too long it end up being a mind fuck and a trip to the pub.

Some producers spend weeks producing a track, others can polish them off in several hours… how about yourself? Do you spend a lot of time on your tracks or are you able to figure out how you want a track to sound fairly quickly?

I’ll have the initial feeling and sound for the whole track in my head once ive got an idea rolling. Sometimes it can only take me a few hours to get a track done before mixing and mastering (which I absolutely hate doing) Sometimes though it can be a week before a track is done from start to finish.

Chronos is evolving into a really filthy bunch, how does it feel to be part of such a sick roster of artists?

Ya know what, the Chronos guys are good lads and really easy to get along with. They were quick to recognise artists such as Dayn, Dr.Philh, Vermin, Mister Six, all with their own unique sound. Obviously I’m glad to be alongside those! Hopefully big things for all of us in the future.

Where do you see dubstep going this year? In the States about 9 out of 10 people have never heard of the genre, I can only assume it’s bigger in the UK?

Well with it originating in the UK, you could assume that yeah. From what I’ve seen and heard, the US scene is definitely more about the harder sound of dubstep where as the UK scene has more of a mix of dubstep styles. I’ve also noticed that radio 1 have been playing a lot more dubstep in the past 6 months, I can assume that it will grow ever more popular. I don’t think it will ever come out from underground and hit the mainstream though, most of the general public wouldn’t be able to handle it

What is your favourite track that you have produced so far?

To be honest I don’t really have a favourite track of my own. Usually once ive made a track, i get sick of hearing it a week later, although Full Metal and Butcher still get me pumped up after a few bevies.

What artists are you currently listening to?

Im gonna give a shout out to these artists that have caught my attention with their tracks in the past couple of months!

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Absolutely everything from ethnic vibes, classical, pop music. Its not often ill listen to another dubstep or drum & bass track and try to draw inspiration from that. I’m gonna keep it as unique as I can, even if I’m getting inspiration from my microwave, its all good.

If you could pick one show/city to play, which one would it be?

Would love to play Fabric one day but Id love to go to the states as well and rock it out over there. I’ve had so many people asking me when or if I’m playing out in the States, but unfortunately its not happened yet.

What do you have your mind set on accomplishing this year?

I’m just gonna keep rolling out the tunes and see where I end up haha. You’ll be seeing a lot more releases from me as I’ve got a 14 track album being released this summer on a new label called Skank Low Records along with tracks on Chronos Records obviously. George, is it just you that runs the label?

It’s me and my partner in crime Ant Marshall. I dragged him up from Bude years ago to come live in Brum back in the days when we cared for nothing else apart from wobbly jump up drum and bass. When the filthy dubstep started coming through we immediately jumped on board. Living in the South West we didn’t have any good clubs to go to but had heard dubstep coming through on the rave scene, particularly when we were at parties towards Bristol. It was really satisfying and a little bit suprising to see it hit the club scene up here so quickly. Considering we’ve DJd together for so long, it was a no brainer for both of us to start the label.

When did you guys start Chronos Records?

We’ve tracked the really filthy end of dubstep closely while it’s developed as it’s the stuff we’ve enjoyed playing out the most. Youtube has always been a valuable resource in finding new producers and we picked out a few early on who we thought were pushing things in a nice direction. We basically started off thinking about how we could make sure these guys got the promo they deserved while making sure they were making the stuff they enjoyed making. One day a friend said “Why don’t you sign them?” and after spending a couple of days reassuring myself it wasn’t a totally ridicullous idea we got on the case. The end of last year was spent getting all the details sorted and this year is about pushing the tunes.

Where is the label based out of?

Based out of badman Brum. The big heads in the scene have been moaning a lot over the last year or two about how shit it’s been. This year has got off to a fucking HUGE start in the second city with regards to events, the artists the city is pushing and now dubstep’s newest make you grinfrown so hard you crapyourself record label. You’ll be seeing plenty of us outside Birmingham as well. Bare. Expect big things this year.

Are you producers yourself?

We’ve dabbled in the production however too many laptop melt downs led to us slowing down last year. We’ve decided that we’d rather put our effort into getting the label pushed this year and then down the line we might get back on it. Although we don’t produce much we do DJ a lot. It’s nice that so many of the artists we loved to fill our sets with are signed to us now. Hit up our youtube channel for an example of our deck battering.

How did you line up such a powerful roster so quickly?

To be honest with you we were massively suprised that these guys haven’t already been signed. Once we spoke to them about where we wanted to go and who we’d got in mind to fill the roster they were all on board pretty quickly. All of them want to see the genre continue to go deeper into the insanity that they weave on their computers and so liked the idea of a label that was only about that from the outset. We’ve sort of jumped onto the scene quite quickly which a lot of people have mentioned, but we wanted the guys to suddenly appear with a release and suprise everyone. The stuff they are producing at the moment is ridicullously sick, so there’s plenty more to come.

How did you come up with the name Chronos?

You have no idea how much of a ballache this was. If you think of a name for a label…it’s taken. We spent so long going through various names and finding out they’d all been done that it got ridicullous. We ended up getting pissed off and writing up a list of totally stupid names and checking them as a joke…and nearly all of them were taken as well. I mean seriously; who called themselves “Cunt Records”. Check it IT’S ACTUALLY A LABEL. We wanted something punchy and had considered various names with impact to do with space and time which hadn’t been viable so I thought I’d check some names of deities through history that had something to do with them. Saw the name Chronos and we both immediately knew that was going to be our name.

Even Shit Records had been used…I mean come on!
