"THIS IS YOUR BRAIN ON DUB"

The Bad Boys From Brighton

Hey Filth Fiends! I recently had the pleasure of speaking with and interviewing the Southbound Hangers! Let me tell you, these guys are some of the most down to earth dudes I’ve gotten to chop it up with. Their base camp is in Brighton, UK (Originally the Isle Of Wight) and SBH have let us into their world of dub, giving us their take on the genre, their gear, plans for the future, and even some words of wisdom for you up and comers! They put together the mix below EXCLUSIVELY for DUBliminal.COM! You won’t find this unique line up of filthy LFO’s and Sub-bass anywhere else on the net! Most of the tracks are unreleased from SBH so I encourage you to start/download this mix, and let the bass consume you while you get to know the bad boys from Brighton…

Southbound Hangers- DUBliminal.COM EXCLUSIVE MIX by DUBliminalCOM
*Track List Below

>Names/Age?
Shaun 23
Max 24

> Where did you guys first hear Dubstep, what track was it, and what was
your reaction?

EEERRR The truth is we cant remember its been that long, although we would love to come up with a great answer, probably DMZ, Hatcha?

> How long have you been making Dubstep and what did you produce before
Dubstep came along?

As SBH about a year and a half
Shaun: About 4 years. I made DNB, Grime and Hip hop.
Max: Not long before we started working as SBH, I pissed about making sound installations??

> Were you guys producers or DJ’s first?

DJs. We’ve both been DJing “VINYL BABY” about seven years in the early days mixing Garage, Jungle and DNB..

> What is your current set-up?

I Mac, Logic 9, midi keyboard, Edirol Audio Interface, Adam A7 monitors, SE Electronics condenser mic, USB tea warmer and various other usefull contraptions like chairs, a desk, sometimes we even use a pen and paper…

> What’s process do you undergo when you guys work together to make a track?

All depends on the style of the track, but we normally work together from start to finish, although Shaun tends do alot of the mix-downs, EQ’s etc…

> What do you think makes Dubstep stand out from all the other genres?

There aren’t many constraints, it draws from so many good styles of music and Dubstep is already developing its own sub-genres. A lot of electronic music is quite stagnent at the moment….. plus the people who listen/make it are all nuts!!! Its been around for a while but its still in the early stages and theres a lot to come from Dubstep.

> How would you describe your sound?

To be honest it’s quiet hard for us to describe our sound,we always try to give our tracks some comedy value but a lot of people are saying its a kind of industrial and some our describing it as future dub with a big DNB influence, but the best way to describe it would be to say Its like when someone follows through… Nasty but quite funny. (if its not you!)

> Where do you see Dubstep going in 2010?

To the bank!! Hopefully… LoL! But seriously, we can see Dubstep really progressing, it already has and its absolutely taking over this year. There’s so many huge artists jumping on it now its starting to become very popular, a lot of pop music is sneaking Dubstep beats in now so and we think its gonna make a big impact to the music scene as we know it.

> What are your plans for the future?

We’ve got a collab with Funtcase called “Wizard sleeve” coming out on Prime Audio. We also have a Southbound Hangers Vs Funtcase EP coming coming out on Shift and another track called “Heavy like Metal” coming out on Perk records. We’re also in talks with Marlow about signing to his label “no comply”.

As for future projects were working on collab’s with Riskotheque, Marchmellow, Funtcase and a sick American artist called Druley. Were continuing to do a lot of work with our MC “Raff” but were linking up with some other amazing vocalists and artists this year too so there should be some great new sounds coming out of it all hopefully.

> What has been your favorite experience so far as the Southbound Hangers?

Just hearing our tunes being played out by people we look up to on radio and at club nights is pretty cool. We do have a good time when we play out, but definitely some of our best experiences have been playing for Dubnium In Bournemouth (UK). Its such an amazing atmosphere there and they put so much effort into the nights its an experience not to be missed! The free beer and food is good, too!!

> What artists are you currently listening to?

Listening to a lot of 2nd 2 None’s stuff, Zinc’s Rinse FM podcast is on repeat, Redlight, Riskotheque, Marlow, Marchmellow, Funtcase, Noisia, Joy Orbison, The Bees, Zion Train and loads of other stuff. Too much to mention.

> Who are SBH influenced by?

Benga, Mala, 16bit, Funtcase,Bar 9 (too many more to mention). Also a lot of other things in life, friends and family. We have new influences every day.

> What advice would you give for up and coming Dubstep producers?

Put the hours in, be open minded, try and make music that you want to hear yourself, and have fun.

> Anything you’d like to add?

Thanks to everyone thats listening and all the people that are supporting us. We’d also like to add a bit more reverb to the flux capasitor.

Thanks guys! Big Ups to the Southbound Hangers for putting together this FILTHY mix for our DUBliminal.COM readers! Show some respect and HIT THEM UP over at their MYSPACE and their TWITTER

Cheesesteppin’ With Tekka

Hey dub headz, I was recently introduced to Tekka after I posted the interview from his boy Sticky Feet. Tekka sent over a very unique mix that I just had to post. He explains how this mix came about along with where he’s been and where he plans on going. So start the mix below, and take a time out to get to know this 21 year old hailing from the Netherlands, Tekka….

Tekka-Cheesestep Vol. 1 by DUBliminalCOM

Tracklist listed below:

> How did you get started in making dubstep?

I had been producing Hip-hop for about 6 months when I first heard Dubstep. It instantly hooked me because it sounded like a perfect blend between my 3 favorite genres: Hip-hop, DnB and IDM. I tried making a dubstep track, and after that I’ve been doing nothing else but making dubstep for the last year.

> What was the first dubstep song you heard?

I think it’s Vex’d – Thunder, still one of my favorite tunes. I’m not 100% sure about that though.

> What gear/software are you using?

Back in the day when I switched from hip-hop to dubstep and I used an Akai MPC2000xl and Clavia Nord Rack, but since it’s really hard to make good Dubstep with just hardware. I’ve switched to Fruity Loops and I have been working with Cubase a few weeks ago for a new project, and I must say I’m very impressed with that program, so I’ll probably start working with that more in the future.

> Why does dubstep stand out from all the other genres, in your opinion?

In my opinion Dubstep combines the flow of hip-hop, the energy of DnB and the creativity of IDM and turns it into one great genre. It’s also a genre you can do a lot with. Basically you can call anything with a heavy bass and a BPM around 140 Dubstep. I’ve made tracks influenced by Funk, Metal, Hardcore and Pop, and I still have a lot more ideas for directions I can take tunes in.

> How did the idea for Cheesestep come about?

Well I’ve been mixing an internet radioshow weekly at AfterDarkRadio.Info (Friday’s from 2200-2400 GMT) and one time for fun, I put in “cheesy time”. I had just gotten a bunch of dubstep remixes of pop songs from some producers I share tunes with, and I wanted to test them out. While I thought people in the chatbox would hate it (to be honest I was a bit drunk and wanted to mess with the listeners a bit) they actually really liked what I played. So I decided to make a mixtape with only dubstep remixes of popsongs. As you can see in the name and the artwork of the mix, it’s all for fun, because in my opinion there’s a lot of people who take dubstep way too serious.

> How would you describe your sound?

That’s a really hard question, I don’t think anyone can really put the finger on their own sound, and besides that, I’m constantly evolving my sound. Flow is very important in my songs though, and I like my songs to have a different angle then what people normally expect in a dubstep song.

> What dubstep artists are you currently listening to?

I’m really impressed with the sounds that are currently coming from Israel. I went to Jerusalem a few weeks ago to play 2 gigs and work on some tunes with Sticky Feet, and it is bursting with talent over there. Everyone should know Borgore by now, but other really good producers from Israel include Tomba, Sticky Feet, WhiskerTwister and Bunny On Acid.

Other artists I’m currently feeling a lot are Bukez Finezt, fellow dutchman Devnik, and Claw (also Hulk). Also showing some great potential for the future are Davr and Oddsokz.

> Plans for the future?

Plenty! I’ve got a lot of releases planned for this year, including an 4-track EP on Dub Frequency, an 4-track EP on Dubline, and an 4-track EP together with Sticky Feet. Also my first Vinyl release should be out in the summer on Dub Frequency. With DJ’ing I hope to go to more countries in Europe to play, there’s nothing I like more then to DJ, and seeing a crowd go nuts on a track you just finished is amazing.

Thanks Tekka! Don’t forget to check him out on the MYSPACE

Funtcase-Skydro Mix and Interview

Funtcase DJ Dubstep

Funtcase – skydro by Skydro

World exclusive interview! Sounds big doesn’t it! How does it make you feel knowing that people are enjoying your music? Has this been a long time coming or have you just started producing?

Cheers! It’s been a long time coming really, I’ve spent a lot of my musical career doing drum and bass and trying to breakthrough within that scene but I thought I’d dabble in other styles of music and this one seemed to work for me.

I’m sure many people have been wondering the same thing – Funtcase. That’s a pretty unusual name…Is there a story behind it?

No story behind it man, I got introduced to the scene not long ago and noticed a lot of people were making huge beats but weren’t really taking it all seriously by calling themselves something funny, offensive and memorable. Naturally, I wanted to be memorable so I went through a nice list of names then obviously I decided to be called Funtcase after the joke – C*nt Face!

You actually started out as drum ‘n’ bass producer – DJ Dose….Is drum ‘n’ bass your first love and Dubstep just an experimentation thing? Or have you stopped producing under DJ Dose and now just continuing with Funtcase?

Well originally it was a joke and just something fun to do making Dubstep, I made like two beats. Gradually, as I’ve started to notice how it’s all panned out it has started to become something I’ve had to balance between the styles. Now I have a big love for Dubstep.

You’ve had a HUGE first release (Gorilla Flex / Make Our Day) on High Roller’s 420 Records label! Are you signed exclusively to the label or are they just doing your first release? If not which labels are you in talks with at the moment?

Well I’m not exclusive but High Roller has been a close buddy of mine from the D’n'B scene and he kinda discovered me along with others and wanted to get my name out there. I sent him those Dubstep bits, he played them out and they got a huge reaction. He instantly wanted to get on the Funtcase wagon and rep my name. Currently signed to 420 Records, Prime Audio (Suspicious Stench’s), XS Dubz, Circus Recs (Flux Pavilion and Doctor P’s) and Heavy Artillery. Currently in talks about a Shift Records release.

When you’re producing what’s your process? Do you think how can I make this tune more fucked than the last or do you get the idea / sounds and then try and re-create them?

I work based on inspiration and the mood I’m in. You won’t really hear beats of mine be too similar in that respect and I think it makes me more exciting as an artist, and maybe even more respectable!

Crissy Criss has been playing your tunes a lot, are you and him close friends? Also you both started producing on the playstation game ‘Music’ is this coincidence or have you been friends since you were kids?

Nah man I’ve not really known Crissy long but again he’s another drum and bass link I seem to be lucky enough to work with in respects of collaborations and him playing my beats out. He seems to like the stuff I make so I’m happy to continuously make beats that he’s willing to rep and get my beats out there.

So what was going through your head when you made ‘So Vexed’?? This is one of the most fucked up tunes I’ve heard in a while!! BIG UP! Is that you speaking at the beginning of the tune? Is this gonna come out on 420 Records as well?

Yeah that’s my voice! Well the funny thing about that is I didn’t really feel the idea when it first came about, I had made the riff and some simple drum riddim over it and it sounded nothing special. I thought I’d make it for my homies from Brighton called the Southbound Hangers and never bother to release it. It got such a huge response so I worked on a better version and made one then for Crissy Criss, who played it at innovation as an introduction to the Dubstep section of his set and that went off like a lamp in a power cut. This was broadcast on 1Xtra so it was massive potential for me and the track.

So I’ve made numerous custom editions now and you can hear it everywhere, but hopefully not overheard, I won’t say names … *cough* ‘When I look At You.’ It’s now signed to Circus Records and a B side is currently being discussed…apparently Caspa didn’t like it!

Who are gonna be collaborating with in the future? You’ve got a night in Manchester coming up with Trolley Snatcha (Autopsy @ The Attic, Oct 24th)…surely you two together could make some evil tunes???

Correct! Trolley now lives in my town and not far from me at all so there’s talks of collaboration there with him. Datsik also wants in on the action, Southbound Hangers, Riskotheque and maybe Crissy Criss dependant if he finds the time as he’s working on an album.

Having started out producing D’n'B do you think this influences you Dubstep production? What are your other main influences?

Oh of course! I mean you ask anyone who’s been into producing Dubstep for a while and they’ll tell you outright I have a D’n'B sound going on, but at this stage, it doesn’t seem to affect my work in bad ways so I’m going to stick with it. My influences range from day to day depending if I’m listening to Dubstep or D’n'B or maybe even some Snow Patrol and Prodigy!

There are quite a lot of drum ‘n’ bass producers have turned to Dubstep, in fact even people like Pharrell have had a go! Do you think that this is just a phase or that Dubstep is where it’s at the moment?

It’s hard to tell you know, I hear Jay-Z is even wanting to dabble in it. I would say it’s the next big thing but I wouldn’t say its a phase. Dubstep far from dying or being a phase it’s at the beginning stages and definitely here to stay. I think its going to evolve similar to the ways drum and bass did and I’m excited to see how it all pans out.

Here at Disrupt:on, we’re loving the direction that D’n'B is going as well! Instra:mental – Watching You on repeat! What is on heavy rotation on your iPod at the moment?
Gargoyle by Doctor P and The Future by Trolley Snatcha – those two are by far my favourite two producers. but there’s some HEAVY competition floating around…

Are you one of those people that when they find a sick tune that they keep it to themselves or do you spread the love?

It’s all about spreading the love mate, we’re not going to evolve the scene by holding beats to ourselves. If someone is sick then they deserve their name repped and I try to do that as much ass possible, big or small.

Top 5 Dubstep producers? (In no particular order)

Doctor P

Trolley Snatcha

Flux Pavilion

Datsik

Bar 9.

What does the future hold for Funtcase? Who would you like most to work with in the studio?

Who knows man, I want to be a big name and I want to be a major talking point…but artists can come and go within the blink of an eye, so consistent beats is a must! Other than the people I’m already discussing collabs with, I’d love to collab with the likes of 16 bit, Bar 9 and Borgore.

Sheesh! You boys are gonne be killing people! Any shout outs?

Yeah man! My gorgeous Dubstep loving lady Kelly, My Dubstep Famo Southbound Hangers, My Dubstep guides Doctor P, Flux Pavilion and Trolley Snatcha, my local night Dubnium for repping me, Mr Sleepz for being the sickest Dubstep 15 year old I know, all the heads who rep my sound and all the people who feel my stuff and drive me to make more and more sickness. Large ups to all.

Big Up to Funtcase for doing this interview for us! Make sure you keep yourself locked on this guy! If you haven’t already heard ‘So Vexed’ make sure you check it out on his myspace page! BIGGG!
