Let’s introduce Habstrakt. You’re known for your brutal drops, monstrous helpings of bass and wonky but wild energy. As just a young lad at the age of 16, how did you get into producing at such an early age and how did you learn the skills to create the sounds you are making?

Well I’ve been working on my dad’s computer in his office for years until I got enough money to buy my own computer. Then I just literally locked myself in my bedroom for years, watching tutorials (Producer Masterclass mostly). I don’t have a secret technique or anything; I just messed around with synths until I came out with the exact sounds wanted. My biggest tip is practice and be patient!

Have there been certain artists that you have taken particular influence from?

My main influences came from the sound of producers such as Culprate, Giant, Rusko, Doctor P, 16bit and more recently guys like Addergebroed, Koan Sound or Teknian

What are you’re thoughts on the ever growing collection of young artists that are becoming successful while still in their teens, do you think it is good for the industry to be embracing such fresh talent?

Yeah totally, in my opinion it’s a really good thing that young lads like Eptic or Teknian can bring something that big in the scene. I think Dubstep is a young music, most of the crowds in dubstep parties are between 18 and 25 and I think they like seeing someone the same age on the stage, from the same generation. It helps to break the wall down between the artist and the public and it’s a good thing! Even if I start to feel a bit old now that I’m 22!! (Joking!)

How did you go about getting your tracks heard, what was the process approaching record labels and building relationships for backing?

That was my main problem back in the days, I knew how to produce but not how to get in touch with labels. At first, last year I had to learn English, then I spent a lot of time on the internet sending demos via email and AIM and finally got spotted by Château Bruyant for my first free download EP. Then Dubsaw for my first EP on beatport, itunes etc. But, I always only sent music to the labels I really wanted to work with, I never sent demos randomly like other people do.

You’ve already seen support from the likes of Rusko, Flux Pavillion and Doctor P. It must seem like things are moving forward quite quickly, why do you think people have been so receptive to you?

Well I feel really lucky and happy that they all took the time to listen to my sounds, give me feedback and play my tracks on stage or radio. I’d say we’re all on the same wonky skanky vibe and maybe that’s why they keep supporting my tracks.

You’ve recently remixed for Lazy Rich on his latest EP re-release ‘The Chase’ ft Belle Humble. How did you get in to talks with Never Say Die Records to make this happen?

Skism asked me for demos a few months ago, I sent them a track and they proposed an EP release on Never Say Die Records. While I was working on this EP (which is now finished) they asked me to do this remix and I was honored! I’ve always been a big fan of Lazy Rich’s music, and Belle Humble is one of my favorite singers, so I took the job immediately and it just took a couple of days to make this remix, I was so inspired!

Tell us about your experience as a performing DJ. What have been your favorite nights and memorable places to play?

I love traveling, meeting people, and smashing places! Touring is a wonderful experience even if sometimes it’s very tiring, but the crowd’s energy always makes up for all the lack of sleep!

There’s a LOT of memorable parties and places, but here’s my best souvenirs (night/crowd/club): Bikini Club in Toulouse, Cross Club in Prague, Rex Club in Paris, La Laiterie in Strasbourg and of course Cable Club in London.

Is it performing or producing that does it more for you?

I love both but they are both very different disciplines for me. I produce alone in calm at night, I spend hours and hours on every sound, well-seated on my chair and I love it! But I also love (and need) the crowds energy, playing tunes out of loud and jumping all over the place, all the traveling etc. They’re two very different things, but you need one to do the other. I couldn’t be a DJ without playing my own tunes, and I couldn’t produce without having the opportunity to play my tracks on stage!

Can you see your sound changing and developing significantly as you grow older and experience different cultures and genres of music? How do you imagine the Habstrakt 10 years from now to sound?

Yes of course, my sound is constantly evolving thanks to all the new music I discover. DJ’ing made me change the way I create my tracks too, now I really try to make something powerful, dancefloor-oriented. And every new track I make teaches me something about production so I’d say my sound becomes more accurate and precise every week!

In 10 years I hope I will still be making music, touring, meeting people! I really don’t know how the dubstep scene is going to look like in 10 years time though, and I can’t tell if I will still be making dubstep, but I hope that I will continue release music and play it across the world! I hope people will continue to bring love in this scene, spreading the word and help all the newcomers to break through.

Going ahead into 2012, what projects do you have coming up and how are looking to keep spreading the Habstrakt name?

First of all I’m going to release a few remixes for NSD, Lazy Rich & Belle humble and Koan Sound. Then I have a 6 track EP coming out on Never Say Die, which is so far the release I’m the most proud of. I also have a few collaborations like the one with my good friend Eptic or Niveau Zero to be released on several UKF compilations.

I have also started work on my album a few months ago, but I have no idea when this project will come out. It’s all still drafts right now, and I want to make something different from my EP and these DJ-made tracks, might be more in a trip hop and cinematic direction, which are still my main influences. I film all the people I met, all the gigs I do and my travels too, which means I’ll be posting few “Habstrakt on tour” videos this year, and they should be quite funny!

Thanks Habstrakt!

Lazy Rich’s ‘The Chase’ with habstrakt Remix is out on April 9th!
