I Got Cottonmouth

It’s time to interview another up and coming dubstep producer making some big waves, this guy is no stranger to poppin’ out banging tunes, and the fans are loving it… just look at his Sound Cloud comments. He goes by the name of Cottonmouth, something myself and about 90% of you have experienced… you fuckin’ “herb inhalata’s”. Being a huge metal fan myself, it’s no surprise that his dubstep remix of Metallica’s “Unforgiven” caught my attention. Cottonmouth was gracious enough to cough up an EXCLUSIVE download of this track for DUBliminal.COM readers only! So “sip on the data” and find out why cheese isn’t the best export his city has to offer…

Name/Age/Location?

My name is Oliver Edgecombe I am 24 years old and I live just outside of a picture postcard country village known as Cheddar and yes this is where the cheese is made.

Where did you first hear dubstep, what track was it, and what was
your reaction?

It’s hard to remember but if I was to put my finger on one it would be Skream – Midnight Request Line on Juno and the moment I heard it I knew it would be big.

How long have you been producing Dubstep and what did you produce before
dubstep came along (if anything)?

I have been producing dubstep since November 2009. I started when I was 14 producing dnb and garage and then stopped when I was about 18 for no apparent reason.

What is your current setup (gear/software)?

I use FL Studio 9/Logitech soundsystem.Lenovo Laptop/NI – Massive/Kontakt/FM8

Do you have a certain process you go through when making a track?

I normally start at the intro and then the tune evolves from that. Normally the tune will change several times through producing it until I find a sound or riff that I am happy with and then base the rest of the tune on this whilst adding variation to the main rhythm.

Did you start of DJing or producing first?

DJ’ing at a local pub called The Swan in Wedmore and they were the best parties ever and all my friends reading this you know what I am on about haha!!!!

How would you describe your sound?

Progressive….I never let the tune sound the same throughout and in most occasions my tunes almost develop into another tune halfway through. I never meant for this to happen but realised after listening over the past few I have done. I feel this keeps the tune interesting but try not to overdo it.

Who are your influences?

Well I am well into Electro/Minimal techno so there is definitely an influence there but a few names which include a bit of dub and electro are Nero, Stephan Bodzin, Flux Pavillion, Oliver Huntemann, Datsik, Akira Kiteshi, Miles Dyson, John Dahlback, Zinc, Bad Company, Ram Trilogy will leave it at that for now.

What artists are you currently listening to?

Dunkelbunt, Parov Stelar, Flux, LDZ no one in particular just all sorts really.

Where do you see dubstep going in 2010?

You can see dubstep is turning more and more mainstream everyday and kicking off around the globe so I think it’s going to become a lot more vocal and musical to attract wider audiences which could be a good thing or a bad thing but who knows?

1 goal you must accomplish for 2010?

To have one of my tunes played on Radio 1, there are many but this would be dope.

Plans for the future, IE releases, mixes, projects?

I have a forthcoming 4 track EP on Permanent Damage Records (www.permanentdamagerecords.com) this summer which will have these two below on it. Also there will be a 3 track EP with Expat-Records but there are no dates set yet. I am currently in contact with an up and coming lyricist to start a new project and have other tunes which have been made that are being held back for other labels I am in contact with so stay tuned.

Advice for up and coming dubstep producers?

The internet is a powerful tool and can be used in so many ways to promote yourself so make the most of it. Dedication is the key and don’t give up!!!!!!

Anything you’d like to add?

Firstly I would like to thank all of my supporters it has been so overwhelming these past few months and without you guys none of this would have happened so bigups!!!

Also I would like to thank MUZZER who has produced all the sick artwork for me, Karbunkle, SINE, SKANKY Sounds, RDA, Mister Deep Rot, DJ Sashwat for promoting me on DI.FM, Beats ‘N’ Pieces for promoting me on Brap FM, GenBass, CFYE, Heavy Thrills, Karmine for playing the Gaga remix on J Da Flex/EL-B Get Darker show, Ben Cooper, Jo Miceli and all the PDR crew for hooking me up also Jeff Libby from Expat for the same thing.
