The dub crew and I just got down to SXSW here in Austin, TX. For those of you that don’t know this is the 4th largest city for live music in the U.S. Anyone who is anybody in the music industry is going to be down here. We’ve checked out the scene, lots of dubstep going on in these here parts, but there is one producer in town that’s been catching our attention for the last couple months, and this badman is Bokator. I had a chance to meet him in Chicago during the FurtherSound Tour. He completely slayed Sub-T, so I jumped on tour and headed down to STL with him alongside Metaphase, Hellfire Machina, and local Chi-Town favs Bandiit. Needless to say it was a weekend to remember, his sets are packed with raw energy and an uncanny ability to take the audience on that “ride” we crave so much. Not only is Bokator a sick dj and producer, but he’s a super nice guy. What can I say, the interview was inevitable, here it is…

Name/Age/Location

David Cartwright, AKA: Bokator, 22, Austin

Did you start out as a DJ or producer first? How long have to been producing for?

I guess I started out as a DJ. When I was about 16 or so I was slowing down and chopping up dirty south hip-hop on a free DJ software. I’d burn off CD’s and go sell them at my school for $5 a pop. I was dabbling in production at the same time, but it was slow going. I was basically limited to free software and samples, so everything was super generic and simple, but it opened my eyes and started to help me wrap my head around the concept of producing. I’d say I’ve been serious about production for a few years now.

Is dubstep the first genre you started producing?

Nah, I started a while before I had heard of dubstep. Originally, I was attempting hip-hop. Then I went to my first rave, heard good electro, and decided that I wanted to head in that direction. A year or so later, after I had started playing at a few clubs, and releasing a few electro tunes here and there, I heard dubstep for the first time. Needless to say, I’ve been doing that since.

Why dubstep?

It was a natural progression for me. Hearing it for the first time, I instantly knew I had found my niche. Like I said, I started in hip-hop, then moved to electro, so the combination of hip-hop beats and electronic bass was exactly what I wanted to be producing and playing out.

What hardware/software are you using?

Everything is made in FL Studio, with a few plugins and a ton of samples. I’ve got an Akia MPD26 for MIDI control, and a set of KRK ST6 studio monitors. That’s really all I feel that I need for now, but I’d definitely like to look into some hard synths in the near future.

Can you describe the scene in Austin?

I could definitely describe the scene in Austin, but my explanation would be completely bias. I’ll say that there are a lot of talented people here, but there is also an over-saturation. But that’s just my opinion, and I can completely understand if anyone else from Austin doesn’t agree.

What do you think of US dubstep compared to UK dubstep?

That’s a tough one. There are tons of awesome producers on both ends, but there are also a lot of kids making stuff that I have no capacity for. As far as the states go, I’m really feeling a bunch of the stuff coming from the bay area. A lot of sick producers out there, putting out vibes, and tunes with emotion. That’s the kind of thing that will have shelf value, and that’s the kind of thing I’m in to, wherever it’s coming from.

Great producers always have that sound, their sound. How would you describe yours?

I don’t know if I can. Production is a constant learning process, so I feel that my sound changes from tune to tune. I can say though, as I get more comfortable with my capabilities, I find myself wanting to be more melodic, and less noisy.

What has been your biggest challenge as a producer so far?

I’d say my biggest challenge so far has been a lack of releases. I work on a ton of stuff, but hardly any of it makes it off of my computer. I get bored easily, and I’m super critical of my music. All in all, I think it’s a good thing. I don’t want to put out anything other than stuff that I’m really feeling, and I especially don’t want to be known for anything other than what I feel really represents me as an artist, or a person. I feel that people loose interest in producers relatively fast if they’re not constantly pushing out tunes, but I’m letting that concept take a back seat. I want to be the guy putting out a few solid tunes every now and again, not the guy putting out a new, generic sounding, mediocre tune every week.

Do you have any special routine or things you always do before you play a show?

Drink a couple beers to take the edge off

Do you have any advice for the up ‘n coming dubstep producer?

Anyone that’s just starting, if you’re reading this, PLEASE do yourself and everyone else a favor: Wait until you’re truly happy with your tunes before you start pushing them out. And please, don’t try to sound like anyone else. That’s all.

What can we expect to see from Bokator this year?

Hopefully, a lot. I’ve got my 3rd release out on Dub Cartel on April 5th, and I’m talking with a few different labels about a few different tunes. There will definitely be a few bootleg remixes that I’ll give away as well. I’ll also be playing some shows around the states. Just sealed the deal to play at big festival in the bay area in May, and I’ve got a few things in the mid-west in June. I’m looking for the frequency of my bookings to increase after this EP drops in April, so hopefully I’ll be playing out in more places, and more often this year.

Lastly you have the floor, anything/one you want to hype up, shout out?

Biggup all the artists, labels, agencies, promoters, and listeners. You guys are pretty much the shit, and without all of you, none of us would be able to do this.

Also, BUY THE FUCKING EP!

April 5th, Dub Cartel Recordings, Egomania EP, available on Beatport, iTunes, and all good digital distribution sites.

Thanks to everyone for their support, and thanks to SUBNOXIOUS and DUBliminal.COM for the opportunity. You rock.

I was talking to Robokop the other day on FB, started chatting on AIM and then we decided, fuck it, let’s do the interview right now… so we did. I was able to get his take on dubstep, what he’s using to produce and master, as well as all the future releases he has in the work, so let’s get into it…

Robokop – Anthem (Forthcoming on One for All Recordings) by Robokop

Alright, so Robokop, dope name… how’d you decide on it?

Well i used to make hip-hop beats with Distrikt and another dude who started calling me Robocop and i was lookin for an artist name so I took it
and since im dutch kop means head so robohead.

That works, always good when the name is given to you by your peers. So you started producing hip hop? Why the move to dubstep?

Well I was tired of the hip-hop image i guess.. I used to rap as well but the whole “I’m better then the rest thing… I’m not like that and I actually didnt like dubstep at the start then I heard Jehova and Cockney Thug and Drumstick by Giant
and that got me hooked and i thought I’m going to make epic beats actually the tune from Chase and Status- Eastern Jam inspired me for that.

So… how long have you been producing dubstep for now?

A bit longer then 1 year.

What software/hardware are you using?

Fruityloops, Massive, and Edirol.

Are you mastering your own tunes?

Well normally yeah. I use Izotope for that. But the last EP’s have been mastered by someone else.

What’s been your biggest challenge as a producer so far?

Good question…to make something new and exciting every single time. I try to put a lot of Soul and Melody’s in my track.

How long does it normally take you to put out a tune?

Uhm depends… anywhere from 2 days to a month.

Do you have any special routine or specific thing you always do before you play a show?

Well i want to be at my show like an hour before to take a look around… mostly nerves I reckon.

So… what can we expect from Robokop this year?

You can expect a lot… Turn Up the Bassman EP with Affe Maria on Scum, the
We Move at Midnight EP ft Julia on vinyl with an SPL remix, plus digital as well.
Tunes being supported by downlink on tour already… and the Anthem EP on One For All Records with a Cyberoptix and Sinister Souls Remix. On top of that, the FIRE EP with Distrikt , a Tim Ismag Remix , Sinister Souls, and Bong remixes

Do you have any advice for the up ‘n coming producer?

My quote would be dont make plain filth.

Couldn’t have said it better myself, NO PLAIN FILTH! Ya hear that???

I hate that

Alright Robo-head, haha, thanks for your time man much appreciated, anything/anyone you’d like to hype up or shout out?

Ya man a shout out go’s out to the MWM Crew! and Marcel Warnas
the Dutchbass Crew…watch out for the dutch in 2011!

I recently came across an up-n-coming dubstep producer from Greece! His track, “Power Tools” caught my attention, as well as our friends over at Betamorph who will be releasing this tune in the near future. Camelorg is the name he goes by now, it was Camel Orgasm but due to some censorship he was forced to convert, choosing to keep the filth in his tunes as opposed to his name. He was kind enough to drop us some tracks as well as a mix for you fiends. The first free tune is “Steer” which he just released on his birthday (HAPPY BIRTHDAY!), a deep heavy tune to break the crowd in. Be sure to check his SOUNDCLOUD for his other bangers that aren’t posted here… like TOASTED SHEEPS and TOXIC MARKET both of which are forthcoming on Mechanoid Audio. The next tune is “All You Can Eat” showcasing his mellow side, nice tune to break up the brain hemorrhaging madness. “Like it” if you like it down below!

1. Name/Age/Location

Teo Camelorg/21/Thessaloniki

2. So I have to ask the obvious questions, how’d you choose the name?

Cant even remember anymore. But i think it was a 2 second thought after a boring 8 hour shift on a net cafe. Unfortunately i had to change it cuz of censorship issues.

3. What kind of music were you into before dubstep came along?

Hip hop, some breaks, disco, grindcore and deathcore for a while. Even greek pop for the laugh of it. My two big loves of the last years are dubstep and drum n bass. I hate the beef that s goin on with those 2 genres tbh.

3. How did you get into producing/dj’n dubstep and how long have you been at it?

i was producing since 05 some abstract hip hop with electronic elements, and many different styles of music for fun and started experimenting with dubstep couple years ago after a foreign beggars gig. This was the day i realised the true bass! I started taking producing not too long ago thoug, when i realised there are people that appreciate and bounce with my stuff. I m djing for about a year now and i really enjoy it

4. What software/hardware are you using?

No hardware at all. I m working with Logic 9 and mostly use Albino for bass sounds. I m usin fabfilter, sugarbytes and meldaproductions plug ins a lot as well.

5. What gear do you play out on?

The usual/favorite set is 2 Pioneer 1000s and a Pioneer djm-800.

6. Name one place you’d really like to play.

Amsterdam

7. What’s your favorite track that you’ve made so far? Why?

I don t have a fav one but the tune i had more fun with is Power Pools. i remember taking some ridiculous screwfaces when i was writing it

8. One person you’d really like to collab with?

Hard to say cuz there are many respectful producers out there but i’d definitely want to collab with Downlink

9. One piece of advice you’d like to give to dubstep producers just
starting out?

Keep your ears and your patience safe.

10. What are your plans for 2011?

I’m releasing Toxic Market and Toasted Sheeps with D-Jahsta’s Locomotion and The cut at 1/1/11 on Mechanoid Audio. All I Need is forthcoming on Pony Licks Records with a Devnik tune. I m also working on a project with a greek MC, not exclusively dubstep, but massively produced too . Expect some more collabs and solos too. And gigs!

11. Lastly you have the floor, anything you’d like to promote, hype
up, or shout out?

Much love to the Pony Licks fam, Mechanoid Audio and Zoltan Tribe and huge ups to FuckYeaDubstep, Twist, Mister Six, Krew and Devnik.
Also a big thank you for the interview!

For those of you that don’t know SKisM, he’s a smart ass… and we like that. I was able to connect with him while he was in North Korea where he just finished wrapping up the shoot for his video below. He was kind enough to drop DUBliminal a few words of his own in between playing his favorite drum (that one) and choir practice. After his EP achieved a worldwide ban, mum getting her artwork turned down, and the lengthy rehab that followed, SKisM is ready to show you his softer side…

Name/Age/Location:

SKisM / 28 / London

So… what came first? Shitty rave music or the drugs?

Definitely the drugs, after that my music got shittier and shittier.

Your “Down with the Kids” video was fucking awesome. How did that idea come about?

Well, a film maker called Tom Paton discovered the original banned EP in a street market in North Korea. Apparently it changed his life so he contacted me and asked for the opportunity to tell the world my story.

What ‘s your favorite track on the EP?

Probably ‘Elixir’ It’s probably the one track on the EP that shows my sensitive side.

Why did you start producing dubstep? How long have you been at it?

My First dubstep release ‘The Blank’ was in 2009, I was just having a laugh with it, but Kimmy J and the NK crew persuaded me to stick at it, and here we are.

What hardware/software are you using?

I don’t use any software, Everything in my tunes is organic, and mostly from my body.

What has been your biggest challenge this year?

Dealing with my Mum after her artwork for the EP got banned. And Rehab.

What do you think separates a good dj from a great dj?

Being Able to Mix two records together without it sounding like two Dustbins Fucking Each Other.

Got any advice for the up and coming producers out there?

Buy My EP, it will get your snare drums phatter.

What’s next for SKisM?

Lots of remixes, Collabs with the Likes of Flux Pavilion, Freq Nasty, ShockOne & Phetsta, and of course lots of Gigs.

Lastly, you have the floor. Anything you want to shout out, promote, hype up, bitch about, or set straight?

Big Shout to everyone at the Label, and everyone supporting. Make sure to get your Never Say Die Goodies at

NEVER SAY DIE.COM.

The EP drops November 8th!

As far as “Down With the Kids” is concerned, “Elixir” is one of my favorite tracks on the EP, and the Funtcase Remix for “Rise of the Idiots” is definitely a tune that is going to get rinsed out rather quickly. Like I said, be on the lookout for the November 8th release, it’s gonna be huge! I see it making the Beatport Top 10 extremely quickly.

<left>
Name/Age/Location?

Daniel Hogg / 25 / Hinckley, Leicestershire

So as most of my readers know, you’ve been one of my favorite dubstep producers for a while now, I remember checking out your myspace when you had 1,300 views. The first track I heard was “Full Metal” and my head nearly exploded, so much so that I named it my favorite track of 2009. You have a very unique sound, fill us in on how you got started making dubstep and how long you’ve been at it?

One of my m8s back in 2007 showed me a dubstep track and at first I was sceptical. It sounded bland, and kinda uninteresting to me what with just its sub bass and minimal drums, so I didn’t really take much notice until a few months later when I heard some of Caspa and Rusko’s tracks back in 2008, “Hammertime” “Where’s My Money” and “Cockney Thug” did interest me. At this time I was producing Hip Hop for a guy called MC Beads and a guy called Dap-C, so I didn’t have time or was even interested in making any dubstep tracks. It wasn’t until I started listening to the heavier sound of dubstep that I wanted to create tracks myself. Artists like Trolley Snatcha with “We Rock the Forest” and “The Future” pushed the genre even further in my opinion and showed people that dubstep really doesn’t have any limits. I wasn’t really sure where to start at first, specially going about making the right sounds for a dubstep track, so I just winged it an made a track for a laugh, not really thinking much of it and posted it up on the Dubstep forum “Jeremy Kyle Shut Your Mouth”. Rusko messaged me the day after saying he played it out through youtube on the fabric sound system. I can only imagine how shit that must have sounded though hahaha. After people like Rusko recognising the track and ideas I had, I thought i may as well carry on making more stuff but keep pushing the sound further.

What do you use to create your sound? (Gear/software/ you don’t have to get into plugins but I know the readers are curious)

I use Cubase and Reason. Reason mainly to create synths, drum kits etc, and Cubase to arrange, automate and record midi, as well as record vocals with a vocal mic I’ve got propped up in the corner along with all the Stella cans. Most of my sounds are created in the Malstrom or Thor Synthesizers, sometimes ill load a preset patch in one of them and mess around until I find a sound I like or ill make a sound from scratch. Hook up one of theses to the Scream 4 Unit and the sound instantly turns into a monster. I have a vocal micropone hooked up through a mixer to my Audiophile soundcard, where Ill put different effects on. The only other important peice of kit ive got is my Yamaha Keyboard, which I use to play everything, even down to the drum patterns. Its very rare that I draw midi notes in.

What music did you grow up on?

Well Firstly I grew up playing the piano, cello, drums and guitar and did all my grades on the piano, as well as doing music theory, so I learned to play quite a mixed bad of styles. I enjoyed playing in orchestras and doing concerts when I was a kid, I still listen to classical/jazz/blues music now. When I was growing up I had a passion for Hard House/Trance/Garage music. The energy and vibe I got from it was euphoric, you might notice some of my tracks taking on the “dance” vibe, I think it bodes well for the dance floor. Saying all that, I also used to listen a lot of rock bands like Greenday, Muse, Oasis and even Marilyn Manson. So yer, a mixed bag of music to be honest, I find every style of music has a certain value. I started composing music in my early teens but just on the piano, I didn’t get into producing music properly till I was about 18. I tought myself how to use Cubase and Reason round about 2002 then left producing music for about 4 years to go onto chasing girls and getting twated out my face! Its only in the last year or so that ive got back into it.

How did you decide to call yourself “Diesel”?

Goes way back. My mates used to call me dirty Diesel because I always said such grimey things.

Do you have a certain method you use when you go about producing a track?

Not really. Ill be messing around creating synths and bash away at my keyboard making melodies and rhythms and most of the time something will just pop in my head and ill roll with it. If I think about things for too long it end up being a mind fuck and a trip to the pub.

Some producers spend weeks producing a track, others can polish them off in several hours… how about yourself? Do you spend a lot of time on your tracks or are you able to figure out how you want a track to sound fairly quickly?

I’ll have the initial feeling and sound for the whole track in my head once ive got an idea rolling. Sometimes it can only take me a few hours to get a track done before mixing and mastering (which I absolutely hate doing) Sometimes though it can be a week before a track is done from start to finish.

Chronos is evolving into a really filthy bunch, how does it feel to be part of such a sick roster of artists?

Ya know what, the Chronos guys are good lads and really easy to get along with. They were quick to recognise artists such as Dayn, Dr.Philh, Vermin, Mister Six, all with their own unique sound. Obviously I’m glad to be alongside those! Hopefully big things for all of us in the future.

Where do you see dubstep going this year? In the States about 9 out of 10 people have never heard of the genre, I can only assume it’s bigger in the UK?

Well with it originating in the UK, you could assume that yeah. From what I’ve seen and heard, the US scene is definitely more about the harder sound of dubstep where as the UK scene has more of a mix of dubstep styles. I’ve also noticed that radio 1 have been playing a lot more dubstep in the past 6 months, I can assume that it will grow ever more popular. I don’t think it will ever come out from underground and hit the mainstream though, most of the general public wouldn’t be able to handle it

What is your favourite track that you have produced so far?

To be honest I don’t really have a favourite track of my own. Usually once ive made a track, i get sick of hearing it a week later, although Full Metal and Butcher still get me pumped up after a few bevies.

What artists are you currently listening to?

Im gonna give a shout out to these artists that have caught my attention with their tracks in the past couple of months!
Bar 9, Downlink, Datsik, Reso, Banana Bomber, Davr, Dr.Philth, Ashburner, Devnik, OddBoy, Vista, Widelows, Tomba, Bare Noize, Borgore, Liquid Stranger, Eptic.

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

Absolutely everything from ethnic vibes, classical, pop music. Its not often ill listen to another dubstep or drum & bass track and try to draw inspiration from that. I’m gonna keep it as unique as I can, even if I’m getting inspiration from my microwave, its all good.

If you could pick one show/city to play, which one would it be?

Would love to play Fabric one day but Id love to go to the states as well and rock it out over there. I’ve had so many people asking me when or if I’m playing out in the States, but unfortunately its not happened yet.

What do you have your mind set on accomplishing this year?

I’m just gonna keep rolling out the tunes and see where I end up haha. You’ll be seeing a lot more releases from me as I’ve got a 14 track album being released this summer on a new label called Skank Low Records along with tracks on Chronos Records obviously. Join my fan page on facebook and ill keep everyone updated on release dates etc.

Can you give some advice for the up and coming dubstep producers?

Just keep doing your thing! If you have a drive and a passion, I’m sure you’ll achieve what you want.

Anything else you’d like to add?

Yer man, Big Ups for the interview and be sure to check out my latest mix!

Cheers m8.

You’d be hard pressed to find 2 tracks of his that sound similar, which is quite refreshing. Goojah was kind enough to take some time out and answer a few questions, while also throwing up a few free downloads for you dub fiends… check him out as well as the tracks below!

<break></break>

> Name/Age/Location?

Joshua Arthur George Goudge!! 22 years of age, Birmingham/Kernow UK

> Where did you first hear dubstep, what track was it, and what was
your reaction?

The first time I really thought anything good about Dubstep was when someone did a guest mix on the Zinc podcast I guess around 2006ish (I can’t remember who it was). I heard it a lot before but never really got into it… I was a Drum & Bass boy before you see and those slow beats didn’t quite cut it for me! But yeah that podcast got me instantly hooked!

> How long have you been producing Dubstep and what did you produce before
dubstep came along (if anything)?

I guess I’ve been producing Dubstep for about three years but only semi seriously in the last two. Before that I used to mess about with bass sounds trying to make Drum & Bass but could never really make anything good! I also studied Sound Engineering at college and had to make loads of different stuff like kids tv soundtracks and that (if that counts)… Haha, they were terrible.

> What is your current setup (gear/software)?

I’m running Cubase 5 on PC, I mainly use Massive (far too standard) also quite a bit of Kontact and V station for little things … I don’t play around with other synths enough to be honest… something I’m going to start doing – I think Dubstep is in desperate need of new sounds!

Studio-wise I’ve got an mbox 2, one Alesis M1 Mrk2 monitor speaker (the other one is blown up and somewhere in Bristol!) and my good old trusty Beyerdynamic DT770 headphones which are getting old and in desperate need of a new jack plug- they only work in certain positions! Oh and my melodica (which I record through my headphones!) .

> Do you have a certain process you go through when making a track?

It depends on what I’m making… If I’m going to make something heavy I’ll start with making the beats first then some horrible Bass noises then go on to FX and layering. If I’m going to make something nice I it’s usually because I’ve come across a nice sample or a melody that I like and will usually build the rest around that.

Whatever sort of track I make I pretty much always start at the drop… It instantly gets my adrenalin going and makes me not want to stop until I’m finished. I always leave the intro till last… Hence why most of mine are really really terrible I think I lose interest by then – something I need to change.

> Did you start of DJing or producing first?

I started DJing first from quite a young age… I used to get my granddad to take me record shopping when we went to visit relatives in Bristol and then take them home and try and mix on my belt drive Soundlab turntables!

To be honest I’ve not really been mixing much in the last few years – I had to sell my turntables for rent etc and got quite bored of playing other peoples records… (I recently have been doing sets of completely my own music but future gigs I’m going to play stuff by different people as well- too much good music out there!).

> How would you describe your sound?

Hmm… Massive wobble horribleness niceness silliness messiness ridiculousness.

> Who are your influences?

I don’t really know who my influences are… I guess just everyone I hear that I like or sounds that I hear that I like and want to recreate, too many to mention!

> What artists are you currently listening to?

To be honest I don’t really listen to Dubstep or dance music at all… I listen to lots of Broken Social Scene, Atlas Sound, Animal Collective, American Analogue set, Circulatory System, 13th Floor Elevators, The Seeds, Grizzly Bear, A Hawk and A Hacksaw, Cocorosie, The Most Serene Republic… That sort of thing! – I’m a massive soppy boy at heart!

Dubstepwise Vistas doing some amazing stuff at the mo. Keep an eye out for Infrasound and a guy called Article from Norton he’s going to be big whidden! On the DnB tip look out for a producer called Slaine… massive massive things coming from him…

> Where do you see dubstep going in 2010?

Who knows! The moon and beyond!

> 1 goal you must accomplish for 2010?

To get a job, get out of debt, stop the bailiffs constantly getting in touch with my mum and pay her back all the money she’s lent me (which I’m very grateful for!). Ahh that’s four things… whoops.

> Plans for the future, IE releases, mixes, projects?

I’ve not got any releases in the pipeline… Keep getting offers from Digi labels but really want to get some more releases on vinyl (any vinyl labels reading this get in touch ). On the project front I’ve been working with and will be working a lot more with a good friend of mine called Infrasound… Keep an eye out for him in the future he’s an absolute beast on the old buttons. Hmm I always forget to do mixes… I might do that soon!

> Advice for up and coming dubstep producers?

Keep at it, watch youtube, sell yourself (something I never but should do!), be nice and smile!

> Anything you’d like to add?

Umm just a good old thanks to anyone who’s brought my records or came to see me play… To any girls that would like to discuss Dubstep or anything else with me , or any guys that want to discuss Dubstep with me find me at www.myspace.com/goojahdubs.

Good day fellow dub heads! I recently had the chance to throw Coma, one of LA’s own, a few questions about his take on dubstep, where he sees it going, and what he plans on accomplishing this year. Coma’s current endeavors into the realm of Dubstep have yielded a dynamic array of sounds. Melodic hooks, sweeping breakdowns and wobbling bass lines have become ubiquitous characteristics of his style. However, Coma carefully balances his driving, dance floor busting grooves with subtle audio edits and precision-crafted effects that provide an unsettling moodiness to his tracks. While listener’s bodies absorb the fullness of his audio-logical aura, their minds wonder elsewhere, carried off by molecular eruptions of ambient noise that seem to radiate into deep space. Sounds like fun doesn’t it? Check out what’s going on in the mind of this 27 year old producer from the City of Angels…

 My Addiction by Coma.

 The Call by Coma.

Where did you first hear dubstep, what track was it, and what was
your reaction?

I heard a mix by Joe Nice after he played my hometown of Albuquerque, New Mexico and I thought it was shit. I really wanted to like it but it was super slow minimal dub. I just couldn’t get down. I think I got more into it when more producers from different genres really started to push the sound into different directions.

How long have you been producing Dubstep and what did you produce before
dubstep came along (if anything)?

I’ve beeen making Dubstep tunes for about 2 years. Funny thing though I’ve always been into slower tempo music and I had listened to a few of my tunes from about 5 or 6 years ago and they reminded me of really industrial Dubstep. Before I narrowed my focus to Dubstep I’d been writing alot of mid tempo stuff. Glitch hop.hip hop.melodic mid tempo type stuff and even some dnb way back in the day.

What is your current setup (gear/software)?

Apple MacBook Pro, Logic, NI Komplete, Mackie Onyx 1220, M-Audio FireWire 410 (about to switch to an Apogee Duet) M-Audio Oxygen 8 and way too many plugins to mention.

Do you have a certain process you go through when making a track?

I tend to start with a 4 to 8 bar loop and just build it up then I’ll start to flesh out the arrangement and the rest of the tune.

Did you start of DJing or producing first?

I’ve been a dj for 13 years and a producer for 8.

How would you describe your sound?

COMASOUND

Who are your influences?
That’s a horrible question, I dig on everything from The Black Keys to Skream to The XX.

What artists are you currently listening to?

The Black Keys, The XX, Le CastleVania, Scuba, Mochipet, Goldielocks, Rusko, The Dead Weather, Phoenix, 12th Planet, Flinch, Trouble & Bass, Fleet Foxes, Major Lazer, Julian Plenti, Dan Auerbach, Sebastian Grainger, ESKMO……

Where do you see dubstep going in 2010?

UP!

1 goal you must accomplish for 2010?

Put out a banger on a great label and conquer the world!

Plans for the future, IE releases, mixes, projects?

Nothing I can talk about yet, but I’ve got plenty of stuff I’m working on.

Advice for up and coming dubstep producers?

Just do it man, it took me getting laid off and finally saying fuck it I wanna do this thing to really approach it the way I needed to.

Anything you’d like to add?

I’d like to thank DUBliminal for the support and interview and peace to everyone who digs on my tunes and mixes!

Well heads, this post has been a while in the making… but I’m glad I can finally bring you guys this tag-team from Amsterdam that have caught my attention in a big way! When Tom and Joran first met it was not the question if, but how they would collaborate. Both considered key-talents in their respective gerne’s, they found a simple answer: Dubstep. They will be making their festival debut in 2010, a little less then a year after their initial dubstep tracks. Stereologue has been kind enough to have us preview some of their latest tracks, I personally am loving, “Here We Go”, and “We Represent” puts a stamp on their unique sound, showcasing their versatility and making their sounds recognizable amongst some of the saturated sounds that us true heads have all come to recognize. These guys also shot us some free downloads and a seamless mix for you filth fiends. I’d say it’s gotta be something in the water, but we all know what it really is…haha. Check out the tracks and interview below and see what’s poppin’ on the other side of the pond…

Name/Age/Location?

Tommy a.k.a. The king Lego Constructor, 23, Amsterdam
Joran a.k.a. Captain Duplo, 19, Amsterdam

Where did you first hear dubstep, what track was it, and what was
your reaction?

Joran: TC – Where’s my money (Caspa remix), The track totally surprised me, my first thought actually was: welcome to the 21st century, this is the future!

Tommy: Probably Skream – midnight request line on the radio, when I was on holiday in Britain. But the one I remember most is Benga & Coki – Night. I was in a club in South London, during a short stay. And
damn that track made the club go crazy, I will never forget that.

How long have you been making Dubstep and what did you produce before dubstep came along (if anything)?

We’ve been producing Dubstep for little less than a year now. Before that we produced house together. Tom produced Breakcore/Hardcore and Drum & Bass before we started collaborating. Whereas Joran produced Minimal, Tech-house and Techno. So we’re both coming from very different genre’s. That makes working together very joyful and a lot
of fun.

What is your current setup (gear/software)?

As we both have our own studio we have two (actually three) different setups:

In Joran’s studio we have a PC running FL Studio with two Yamaha HS80M monitors, a Access Virus TI desktop and a Native Instruments Machine and some plug-in’s. Besides that there’s a DJ-booth with all the club standard gear(eg. DJM-800, CDJ’s, SL1210 MKII’s and Traktor Scratch Pro). In Tom’s studio we run cubase with mainly Massive and a bunch of samples. Besides that we have a studio mic & a soundcraft mixer at Tom’s place for our vocals and Yamaha HS50M monitors. As Tom’s studio
is in the city centre we cannot crank the volume up all the way, Central piece of hardware at Tom’s place is the midi-keyboard/controller; a emu- Xboard 25 & Korg SP-250. Tom has a
second studio just outside Amsterdam where we can be as noisy as we
want (naturally, we have bigger monitors over there; Stanton AMT 6).

What process do you guys go through when you make a track?

It’s difficult to describe something as a ‘process’ as the way it works is totally different every time. Sometimes we start with a bassline, sometimes with an interesting effect. Sometimes it could be
a musical piece or a movie. After the initial ideas the track usually goes back and forth between our studio’s or we’ll go in one of the studio’s and work on it. After producing multiple tracks we lock
ourselves up in one of the studio’s and do the final mastering.

Did you start of DJing or producing first?

In our starting years DJing was the big thing for both of us. Tommy Started DJing when he was 10 and Joran when he was 12. after that we got ourselves some software and sample-libraries and that’s how we both started to make our music.

What do you think makes dubstep stand out from all the other genres?

Dubstep has something in it for everyone. Whether you come from Hip Hop, House, D&B or whatsoever, dubstep can work for you. It’s slow rhythm combined with the massive basslines and electronic sounds it’s irresistible. All the different elements involved work really well in the space that dubstep offers. Also, at parties it doesn’t matter what you look like or what you do, as long as you’re enjoying the music;
nobody cares.

How would you describe Stereologue’s sound?

It would be nice to say: typical Amsterdam sound. Only problem is there is no such thing as a typical Amsterdam sound yet hahaha. But our productions usually contain heavy basslines. Completed with some melodic stuff most of the times. We always seek that thing we call: ‘The bounce’ (check out some Timbaland studio vids to understand that LINK: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kIJAVF0Jl0).

Who are your influences?

Rusko, Caspa, Benga, Skream, Bassnectar, Datsik, Noisia (check out the track: ‘Lekker’ that had been of a big influence ), really the guys that are big at the moment. But we’re also influenced a lot by
everything that is going on in Amsterdam. Whether it’s a walk through the city or the park. And as we’re both from different genre’s, we’re influenced a lot by that as well.

What artists are you currently listening to?

Tommy: the new Gorrilaz plastic beach album, The Eels, Radiohead ( love to play their songs on piano.) and of course a lot of Dubstep (old and new) like the newer guys from Circus Records and I really like the coming releases of Chronos Records and Rottun records.

Joran: I like to listen to Chris Liebing his CLR podcast, Kyteman (check his music out, it’s really good!), BT’s binary universe and all my techhouse and dubstep tracks I play out.

Where do you see dubstep going in 2010?

Big, certainly in Amsterdam dubstep is boiling and about to explode. Everyone has heard about it and talking about it, but the amount of parties and artists in Amsterdam is limited. The demand is there, so no doubt that people are going to respond to that demand and push dubstep to the dutch scene. As far as the dubstep sound: perhaps we’ll be seeing more influences from other genre’s like house, minimal and techno.

Plans for the future?

There are always loads of plans, but making and playing music are our key-plans. As we’ve now produced a significant amount of tracks, we’re searching for a label to release our first EP in 2010. Besides that we’re trying to get out and play as much as possible. When it comes to
dubstep, we’re still in our start-up phase, so there is a lot of work to do! We think it will be cool to do some remixes and collaborations but the amount of artists here is still limited.

Advice for up and coming dubstep producers?

Keep it real, haha. Seriously, do not try to force your music career, it has a bad influence on your motivation and passion. Make and play music for the sake of it, not to become the next DJ Mag top DJ.
However, that does not mean that there’s no hard work involved.

Anything you’d like to add?

Thanks for the interview, big up to Dubliminal for supporting upcoming artists and the Dubstep scene! For the readers: check us out on any of the social networks (we’re pretty much everywhere) and let us know what you think about our music!

Well well well boys and girls, ladies and gentleman… I haven’t been this excited about a producer in a while! This is his first interview and I’m proud to break this dubstep prodigy to you filth fiends. I think we have some real talent on our hands here and the Dubstep community is about to get woken up from the next big thing out of Canada. I’m eager for you to start listening so push play if you haven’t already and immerse yourself into the world of sounds that is, Mr. Floyd.

 Darkside [Mr.Floyd] by MrFloyd

 Machine March [Mr.Floyd] by MrFloyd

 The S.S. [Mr.Floyd] by MrFloyd

“Darkside” just has a super nasty bass line that thumps! It fires on all cylinders and the production is on point. The sounds he is creating is really just another reminder of how Canadian producers are really establishing themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the dubstep scene. They truly are developing their own unique style that just sends dance floors off the richter scale. The choice of Star Wars samples tops it off nicely and is definitely one the kids are going to go crazy for, and leave the up ‘n coming producer scratching his head saying… “How’d he do that?” Look for this track coming to a venue near you.

Don’t even get me started on “Machine March”… this track is in my top 3 right now so
let’s just “get to the point…”

FREE MR. FLOYD DOWNLOADS BELOW

</break><break>
>>Name/Age/Location?

Jono Floyd. 20. Vancouver, Canada

>>Where did you first hear dubstep, what track was it, and what was
your reaction?

The first time I heard dubstep was from a mix cd that came with computer music mag sometime late last year, by Rusko. The song that was put on repeat was Eastern Jam – Chase and Status. I was stunned, it was HEAVY yet so smooth… instantly hooked!

</break><break>
>>How long have you been making Dubstep and what did you produce before
dubstep came along?

Im still very new to dubstep, its been about 6 months… before that I was fooling around with electro house and having no luck.

</break><break>
>>What is your current setup (gear/software)?

Right now Im running Logic Pro 8 on my Mac, KRK monitors, Komplete 5, and a handful of other plug-ins besides the stock logic ones.

</break><break>
>>What process do you go through when you make a track?

Its not something that stays the same, some tracks will take me days to arrange until it sounds even remotely like what I want. Other times I can sit down and have the better part of a track nailed out in a couple hours. Start with drums, then bass, noise, all the fun stuff.

</break><break>
>>What do you think makes dubstep stand out from all the other genres?

With dubstep the rhythm is so apparent yet, it can go absolutely anywhere you take it. It can make you want to dance, or thrash!

</break><break>
>>How would you describe your sound?

The Mr.Floyd sound definitly hasn’t fully developed yet, but its getting there slowly. The best way to describe it would be dirty, with sass and a slight bit of confusion

</break><break>
>>Where do you see dubstep going in 2010?

I have absolutely no idea where it will go, but hopefully it will keep growing like it is right now.

</break><break>
>>What artists are you currently listening to?

Excision, Datsik, Cookie Monsta, March Mellow, Nero, 12th Planet, Tomba, Suspect, Borgore, 16bit … to name a few

</break><break>
>>Who are your influences?

Datsik was the first dubstep I had heard that was truly filthy, so I’d have to say he is a major influence. Other than that, random people in ever day life spark weird ideas in my head

</break><break>
>>Plans for the future, IE releases, mixes, projects?

I just released 3 of my tracks with a new label out of LA called Serious War Recordings, hopefully there will be more releases to come. Also going to put up a mix with a lot of stuff that I haven’t let people hear yet, so be on the lookout!

</break><break>
>>Advice for up and coming dubstep producers?

Keep putting in the hours!

</break><break>
>>Anything you’d like to add?

Thanks to the people supporting me, and for the interview… righteous!

Another tag-team breed of talent coming out of the UK… (I don’t wanna hear it Squitty!) These guys have been crankin’ out some bangin’ tunes over the last couple months and they were kind enough to give us a nice little preview of what’s to come, not without a twist of humorous sarcasm, of course. These guys have just as much character as their music does, and just a heads up, “Jokes” is one of my favorite tracks right now… So sit back with your brew, your bud, or both and get to know Jack and George from Magic Mash…

 Magic Mash- Jokes by DUBliminalCOM

>>Names/Age/Location
Jack & George 22 Guildford UK

>>Where did you guys first hear dubstep, what track was it, and what was your reaction?

We’re both DnB heads and heard it first at DnB nights down in the West country. Didn’t really get it ’til we heard it on a decent system. Got hooked on the sub.

>>How long have you been making Dubstep and what did you produce before
dubstep came along (if anything)?

Together for about a year now, done bits of everything before doing music tech at school etc. Write a bit of DnB, too.

>>How did the name Magic Mash come about?

From that kid’s book where the mashed potato genie grants wishes to that boy and his granddad. Page turner

>>What is your current setup (gear/software)?

Logic, macs and some shiny new speakers. We would like to make Rob Papen airtight…

>>Please describe the process you go through when you make a track together.

We both kind of start tunes separately, get bored then swap em switch it all up and eventually sit down together and finish them off.

>>What do you think makes dubstep stand out from all the other genres?

Half speed allows space for serious bassweight + room to get some complicated beats and rhythms in.

>>How would you describe your sound?

Tech and heavy, especially our newer stuff. Our mate Mystery who runs the deep end night down in Exeter calls it ‘Ravey as you like’… We also got some chillers too ps.

>>What has been your best experience so far as Magic Mash?

This interview, right now, is the single greatest moment of our lives.

>>Where do you see dubstep going in 2010?

Even bigger and better, especially when our new dubstep show on Kane FM kicks off! (plugtastic)

>>Who are your favorite dubstep producers at the moment?

Eskmo, Reso, 16Bit, Kryptic Minds, Ruckspin, Hulk, Rebel Sonix, and loads more.

>>Where do you draw your influences from?

2:27 – 2:40 in the noisia and foreign beggars tune ‘Contact’.

>>Plans for the future, IE releases, mixes, projects?

We got jokes out now =D

>>#1 goal you’d like to accomplish this year?

Having a 20 page thread on DSF about how we are ruining dubstep.

>>What venue (country) would you most like to play?

Fabric / Matter in London. Glade festival.

>>Advice for up and coming dubstep producers?

Soundcloud and AIM is the way forwards. Work on your tunes and get as much advice as possible. It’s too easy nowadays to flood the internet with your first shit tune. We know cos we did it =).

>>Anything you’d like to add?

Big up to Dubliminal!

Thanks for taking a time out guys, be on the look our for more BIG tunes from these young lads!
